Diet

What do Snow Leopards eat?

Snow Leopards usually have an open pallete depending on where they are, but more often then not, they mainly hunt sheep and goats. Their favorite prey consist to three animals: The Blue Sheep (AKA a Bharal), The Argali (another wild sheep species) and the Asiatic Ibex, a large wild goat pictured below. Snow Leopards savior their food, taking 3 to 4 days to complete consume their kill, which often has them defending their meal from scavengers like Vultures and Ravens.

Asiatic Ibex

Because it takes awhile for them to eat, the Snow Leopards end up hunting a large animal every 8-10 days on average, with female and male Snow Leopards having different predation patterns. The avaliability of food is a very important factor to the Snow Leopard, and if they can't find any prey that fits the big 3, they will start to feast upon livestock like sheep, goats, horses and young yaks. This is espeically true either during the winter, or if said livestock are left behind, acting as opportunistic predators.
